A drive from Madrid or Barcelona to San Sebastian wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Hotel Aire de Bardenas, a property set in the beautiful rural landscape of the Navarre. Situated between wheat fields and wind turbines, this desert retreat is comprised of a series of austerely modern cubes and bubbles designed by Barcelona-based duo Emiliano López and Mónica Rivera. As a one-story structure, the hotel bears a low profile that is not only harmonious with the natural beauty of the landscape but also protects it from the harsh winds that can pass through the area.
Some rooms offer views into the desert while others open to private courtyards with outdoor bathtubs. The room décor, like its exterior, is minimalist but comfortable. Food comes from the on-property garden and local region.
This is an escape worth detouring for.
